Living in Vienna? Looking for a place to stay? Before you’re doomed to crash on someone’s couch for more than four months, try this alternatives:
I suggest you try to secure accomodation without using the service of an estate agent, as this will save you the commission (which usually is three monthly rents!)
As a rule of thumb, average rent of unfurnished apartments in Vienna will be around EUR 10 per square meter per month.
If you got problems with your landlord, you can always turn to Mietervereinigung Wien (Attention: You have to be a member to get an appointment with their lawyers.)
Also, it is mandatory for everyone to register with the Municipal District Office (Magistratisches Bezirksamt) within three days after your arrival in Vienna (that’s the official version – you just go, whenever you have time). You have to bring your passport and the completed Meldezettel, a form which can be downloaded as pdf-File (additional information attached as well).
Additionally, all EU citizens who are staying in Austria for longer than 3 months have to register again within the first 3 months in order to receive a confirmation of registration (Anmeldebescheiningung, a fee applies).
One of these Municipal District Offices can be found in every district, a list is provided online. Check the opening hours though! source
